Leiv Rieger, PhD, P.Eng., specializes in monitoring, control, and modeling of biological wastewater treatment processes. A focus of his work is to develop new tools for data quality evaluation. Leiv is chairman of the IWA Task Group on “Good Modelling Practice – Guidelines for use of Activated Sludge Models”, where the focus is to make modeling more practical for industries and consultants.
He is the past chair of the Water Environment Federation (WEF) sub-committee MEGA (Modeling Expert Group of the Americas), member of the WEF committees Municipal Resource Recovery Design (MRRD), Intelligent Water Systems (IWS), and Plant Operation & Maintenance (POM). Leiv chaired the scientific committees of the 1st and 2nd IWA/WEF Wastewater Treatment Modelling Seminar (WWTmod) and was the co-chair of the Instrumentation, Control and Automation (ICA) 2017 conference.
Leiv is well-connected within the wastewater industry as well as within the academic community. He serves as Editor and member of the Core Editorial Board for the scientific journal Water Science & Technology and is a regular speaker at regional and international conferences.
Leiv is the recipient of the 2015 WEF Eddy Wastewater Principles/Processes Medal for his paper Ammonia-Based Feedforward and Feedback Aeration Control in Activated Sludge Processes. Leiv is a Fellow of the International Water Association. IWA fellows are recognized for their sustained outstanding contributions to the profession.
